Home owners should always ensure areas to be painted are clean. Not only the surface to be painted but the surrounding area to ensure it is free of dirt and other particles that can interfere with the surfaces to be painted and produce less desirable project outcomes.

Areas to be painted should be in good repair to include all items are fastened securely, there is no flaking nor peeling paint, holes are patched and cracks are filled. Rough areas are sanded and leveled as needed. Primer should be applied to all areas to be painted. Primer helps to seal the surface and creates a surface which paint more easily adheres. Primer is also less expensive than paint making it an attractive option for that first coat. The second coat should be a quality paint product compatible with the initial primer product. A third coat is most often not required but may be applied if one desires. Many primers may be tinted closely to the color of the final top coat but is not required for a great outcome.

A simple test for non believers when it comes to the “is primer needed question?” Place a small amount of primer on your finger or other surface and allow it to dry. Once dry wash the primer off. Do the same with the paint. Which one was easier to wash off? Most likely it will be the paint. Primer is designed to seal surfaces and creates a better surface for new paint to adhere to. Paint adheres to primed surfaces much better than unprimed surfaces. Projects are more esthetically pleasing when primer is utilized and will last much longer. We hope these tips help you with your project.
